Although the Sri Lankan kitchen has very tasty things to offer, like egg hoppers, roti, kottu and rice and curry, you will definitely have those days when you long for different flavours. I’m just listing a few restaurants for the days that you crave some good food from other parts of the world. They are more expensive places, but if you’re going for a different type of food, you better do it right.
This is a great place to go when you want to have Asian food, but not Sri Lankan. Monsoon serves Indonesian, Malaysian, Singaporean and Thai dishes in a beautiful ambiance. The food is very tasty, and if you have visited any of these countries, the food will instantly bring you back to those places. The restaurant is located in Park Street, which has more cuisines to offer. So if you’re in the area, the other restaurants are worth a try as well.
La Rambla used to be a Mexican Restaurant but now serves Thai food. Apparently changing the kitchen was enough work, so they didn’t bother changing the name. It’s located in the South of Colombo, so a little further out. However, if you want to eat some good Pad Thai or Thai curry, I would recommend this place. Besides that, it’s only a few minutes’ walk to the beach, which is a bonus.
For those who love a good bowl of hummus every now and then, Arabian Knights will serve you well. They also do different kinds of sandwiches with falafel and shawarma, as well as grilled dishes. If you’re not into Arabic food, they do serve some non-Arabic dishes. Also, the options for vegetarians and vegans are clearly indicated in the menu, which might be helpful for some.
Within walking distance of the house, you will find a really good place to eat Chinese food. The menu is extensive, so you might have trouble choosing. The portions are pretty big though, so make sure you don’t make the same mistake as we did and order too much.
This is the place to go if you want some proper pasta and a good glass of wine. Many places will serve pasta in Colombo, but this place serves the closest I’ve had to the real Italian deal. Most of their pasta dishes are made with freshly made pasta, and the sauces are very flavourful. Also, the set up of the restaurant is very nice. Upstairs they have a tiny balcony, which is a great place to sit when the weather is good.
Isle of Gelato
This is not a restaurant, but as an ice cream lover, I have to mention this place. You can find this little stall in the food court of the Colombo City Centre mall. They serve absolutely delicious, rich and creamy ice cream. One scoop is definitely not enough. Good thing you can get tastes of all the different flavours before you finally decide what you’re going for. If I can recommend anything, it’s to try them all!
